Everyone Meet Sophie!

But First: A Milaana Insight!

Has anyone noticed that we haven’t shared a Hero Profile in a while? Well there is a good reason for that and you are about to be let in on the secret. A few weeks ago the Milaana team decided that the Hero Profiles as they were didn’t exactly exude the downright awesome-ness of our current heroes! The questions were a touch on the boring side and didn’t dig deep enough into the wonderful souls of our Milaana team. We admit we made a little mistake and didn’t take the time to really think about our purpose. Milaana is all about digging deeper and finding those really honest, authentic moments. We are all about telling the story and taking the time to tell it right.

So we had some time out and set out on a journey to create a new set of questions that really brought out the personality and soul of our team. This process was accelerated by a communication workshop where we really delved into moments of belonging, clarity and learning. Each team member shared his or her moments with the team and it brought such a greater sense of understanding and acceptance. So with the lessons learnt from the workshop, we crafted a new set of questions and here they are in all their honest and authentic glory!

Everyone please meet our Social Media Hero Sophie, a 21 year-old marketing and journalism student from Griffith University Gold Coast.

Sophie originally did her Hero Profile two months ago when she first came on board with Milaana but a lot has changed since then and you should see the transformation! The first Hero Profile was a little rigid and didn’t show a lot of passion. The questions were mainly about Milaana, but only having been at Milaana a few weeks, the questions didn’t accurately tell the Milaana story. In this next profile you’ll see how the Sophie/Milaana story has developed and combined into a story about truth, story-telling and living your dreams.

Tell us all about yourself. What is your story?

I’m Sophie and I am a Coffs Harbour girl currently living in the Gold Coast trying to make it big in the marketing/journalism arena. I first heard about social enterprise in a first year class at university and was immediately hooked! As a Gen Y-er, the idea of charity doesn’t naturally appeal to me and I’d much rather get involved in the causes that I care about. Social enterprise, on the other hand, is a whole new ball game! I flirted with the idea of social enterprise for two years before I came across Impact Youth Social Enterprise Conference and first heard about Hollie and Milaana. Other than social enterprise, I am also passionate about blogging! I blog about life at timetobefabulous.com and am always scouting new ideas for my next post. My goal in life and my career is just to tell honest and authentic stories. I am also really interested in the concept of personal branding and blogging for businesses who are trying to build their brand! The world is my oyster at the moment! So many exciting developments occurring in both the business and journalism worlds and I am so happy to be a part of it all!

How did you first hear about Milaana?

I mentioned before about the Impact Youth Social Enterprise Conference. I applied to be a participant of the conference two months ago and as I researched the speakers, I came across Milaana! I was originally just looking to interview Hollie for my own blog but I couldn’t find her email anywhere. So I added her to my newly created LinkedIn profile and she messaged me within the hour asking if I was interested in applying for an internship. Now I am writing for the Milaana blog and get to chat to Hollie every week! It was definitely a wonderful twist of fate from the universe!

What made you want to get involved with Milaana?

As soon as I heard about Milaana, I thought “YES! Finally! The world needs this”. The more I read, the more I became intrigued. Meeting Hollie and the team only confirmed that this was an incredible opportunity! I come out of every meeting feeling so energised, inspired and lucky to be part of such a magical experience. Who wouldn’t want to come aboard with Milaana?!

What is your role and what does it involve? What is your favourite part of the job?

My role with Milaana is Social Media and Content Creator Hero and I basically get to play around online all day. I’m the one posting the Facebook updates, retweeting quotes, sending out email newsletters and researching the next blog post. My absolute favourite part of the role is hitting publish on a blog post and watching people read, like and share it! So much effort goes into research, writing and editing and it is beyond rewarding to finally let it go live to the world!

What skills and abilities are you improving?

The obvious ones like social media, writing and marketing but I’m also getting the chance to work on operational skills that I never predicted. For example, a few weeks ago we decided that I needed a content creator to help me out. So I got the chance to go through the process of scoping the project and writing a project outline for the new intern. It was interesting and a nice change to doing what I always do! I’m also really improving my soft skills such as communication, working in a team and public speaking. We have such a great learning environment at Milaana and every week is different with new and unique projects!

What have been the highlights of working with Milaana and what has really challenged you and made you grow?

Wow, where do I start? I think the main highlight so far would have been attending the Impact Youth Social Enterprise Conference with some of the Milaana team a few weekends ago. It was such a big learning curve and I got the chance to connect with so many inspired individuals. The greatest challenge so far has just been finding the time! The Milaana team is full of so many high-achieving students and I think we all struggle with finding a good balance! However this has taught me how to multi-task and prioritise. I’m slowly learning the importance of a good rest and definitely taking the time to do the things you really love!

What has been your biggest aha! moment? When did you start feeling like part of the Milaana family?

My biggest Milaana aha! moment was getting to celebrate Milaana’s first birthday at dinner with the team! It was a wonderful celebration with new and old team members and I felt a real sense of belonging. I also think this was the moment I started to feel part of the Milaana family too. Ever since then, whenever we see each other, it is all hugs and big smiles!

What really drives you and how are you going to change the world?

I touched on it before when I said I am really passionate about telling honest and authentic stories. A good story has such a great ability to inspire and empower and I really want to be a part of bringing that feeling to people. I want to change the world by being my most happy, authentic self and telling these stories to other people. Milaana team member Ruby recently shared a quote with me and I feel like it is so relevant to what I am trying to do –

“And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people
permission to do the same”. Excerpt from a beautiful passage in Marianne Williamson’s Book “A Return To Love” that you can check out here!

What do you hope to achieve during your time at Milaana?

The first time I met the team I was chatting to Johan about what I wanted to achieve from Milaana and I said something completely bold like – “When it is time for me to graduate I don’t want to have to apply for jobs but I want organisations to offer me jobs”. This is something that really stuck in Johan’s head and which has been brought up a number of times in our conversations. However, I honestly feel like Milaana has become so much more than an opportunity for future employment. It is a place where I get to be with my people and build a future of my dreams.

What is next for you? Where do you see yourself in five years?

Gosh, who knows? And isn’t that the beauty of it all? A few months ago I was thinking about becoming a high school teacher and now I’m writing the blog for a tech/start-up social enterprise! Life is crazy and unpredictable and I guess I like it like that!
