Name: Miranda Amey
Study: Bachelor of Business Management (Majoring in Marketing) at The University of Queensland
Position at Milaana: Society Engagement Officer at UQ
Why did you join Milaana?
I have always enjoyed volunteering and the prospect of internships and volunteer work for cause driven projects is something I was looking for.
However, it is the Milaana community (the tribe) that has become the most beneficial aspect for me. Being surrounded by passionate people is very inspiring; the tribe encourages you to be the best version of yourself.
Also, the very concept of Milaana intrigued me. I didn’t completely understand the term social enterprise until I came across Milaana. I wanted to be a part of something that helped a variety of people in many different ways.
What do you hope to achieve during your internship with Milaana?
I hope to establish good connections with other university societies, so that every year Milaana will successfully collaborate with a variety of clubs and be introduced to many different student communities. By the end of the year, I would like to say “I’m from Milaana” to any student in a UQ social justice club and have them know who we are and what we do.
I hope to further develop my own skills and confidence in applying them. I would like to inspire as many people as possible to apply for volunteer work and internships, once they have the confidence, it will remain with them.
Where would you like to be, how would you like to feel, in five years’ time?
I will be well and truly in the work force by then, hopefully in a job I love. I would want to feel that my life is heading in a direction I’m happy with. I will most likely being living overseas (gotta love British passports), working, traveling and figuring out the next stage of my life.
Will you integrate your ‘social’ interest into your career, or pursue it on the side?
I would like to do both. As I establish myself in the marketing world, my social interests may be on the side. However, once I have experience and worked my way up the ranks, I would like to integrate helping others into my job. How you ask, I have no idea yet. It may be getting the organisation to do free marketing work for charities and social enterprises or I may open my own marketing firm where x amount of marketing is giving back to the community. All I know is that I will never not care about the community and helping others.
What does success mean to you?
Success is achieving your own personal goals and being happy with where you are in life.
What does it mean to you to be part of a tribe of social leaders?
Being surrounded by like-minded, passionate people who want to make a difference. Individuals within the tribe will be studying different courses, have skills across any discipline but what unities us is the desire to help others.
Lovely to meet you Miranda!
